Sea Weed Baths

Collins’s Hot Seaweed Baths established in 1932 is situated on the Ladies Strand in Ballybunion and is a place where relaxation and rejuvenation are encouraged. Lie back in a bath of saltwater and serrated wrack freshly picked nearby in the wave-cut platform known as the Black Rocks and soak in the softness of the iodine and natural oils of the seaweed released into your seaweed bath. Relaxing in the seaweed is an old therapy for aches and pains and tired muscles and is a destressing experience for the body and combats the strains of the pace of modern day living. With your own private bathroom, it is recommended to soak for a half an hour and take in the sounds of the crashing waves of the Atlantic on the beach. Collins’s Hot Seaweed Baths has remained in one family for three generations. One of the four remaining authentic seaweed baths in the country. Tel: 068 27469. On the beach – 1 min walk from the hotel.

Carrigafoyle Castle

Carrigafoyle Castle in Ballylongford – now a listed National Monument, was built by Connor Liath O’Connor at the end of the 15th century using a design borrowed from the Normans. The O’Connors of Kerry also built the Friary of Lislaughtin. St Lachtin was the first to preach Christianity in the area. Various internal rooms and staircases are accessible. There are no visitor facilities, but this need not detract from the medieval experience of seeing the castle.
